Barry Bloom By the 1820's the Unitarian Church dominated New England and the Northeast. Their call to reason, not dogma as the basis for religious belief and action inspired many scientific and political leaders of the day to join and contribute to the evolution of this freeing message. Jefferson, the Adam's family, John and John Quincy who were buried in the UU church in Quincy, MA, Emerson and Thoreau, the Transcendentalists, and many other thinkers and leaders contributed to the movement. It is said that the Unitarians are the Head of UU'ism and that Universalism is the Heart. After these two services may we all be clearer if that is true. 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF EXECUTIVE ORDER 9066 On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which allowed for the forcible removal of 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry from their west coast homes and farms into 10 major US concentration camps located in desolate areas across the United States. Two-thirds of these prisoners were US citizens by birth. February 19, 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066. To commemorate this event, the local chapter of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) will hold a lunchtime gathering on Thursday, February 23rd, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 929 15th Street in Greeley, from 11:45 to 1:00 p.m. The event will feature two Japanese American speakers, Jackie Tono and Marge Taniwaki, who will speak on "The Myth of Tokyo Rose and Other Tales". Both Jackie and Marge have a direct connection to the WWII American Concentration Camps. Jackie's father was incarcerated at Heart Mountain Concentration Camp in Wyoming. Jack Tono was a Resister who refused induction into the US military from behind barbed wire until his constitutional rights were restored. Marge spent the first four years of her life at Manzanar Concentration Camp near Death Valley in California. Bring a brown-bag lunch and learn rarely told history with relevance to today. LGBTQ+ Family Matters: Beginning on March 6th there will be an adult support group for LGBTQ+ Community, Significant Others, parents, family members, and allies. This group will be held on the First and Third Mondays from 6:30-8:30pm at UUCG! Facilitated by Julie Miller. Questions? Contact Julie Miller. If you've noticed our multi-language lawn signs and would like your own, go online to https:/www.facebook.com/welcomeyourneighbors. We're trusting that the refugee group using our building and UNC students walking past the church are among the people reassured by our signs. My UUCG Family: I have been blessed recently with a request to open up a toddler room for 2.5-year-olds at Trinity Lutheran Preschool. This is a brand new program, so I am building everything from scratch. I have started the process of gathering supplies and curriculum resources for the classroom, though I have come to the realization that I need some extra help. I am reaching out to you all to request any items you are done using and are willing to donate. I am looking for toys, books (bilingual is great), throw pillows, blankets, etc. I’m particularly looking for toys that are not electronic or battery operated in order to promote more imaginative play amongst the children. I’m grateful for any help I can get. Thank you very much! Shauna Yanke-Hofmann Grocery Certificate Volunteers Needed! Due to a change in family life Rosemary Edmiston must relinquish her duties as a grocery certificate volunteer and Hollis Berendt wishes to spend more time with her family- thus it is time for a personnel change. We are hopeful that several will volunteer creating a team of volunteers with a coordinator so that the duties will not fall on one or two people all of the time. The coordinator or at least one volunteer should have access to a computer. The grocery certificate service provides added revenue for the church, and works closely with the UUCG Treasurer and Board. Volunteers need to contact Rosemary, Hollis, Erika Coan or Reverend Barry Bloom. How can I contact Rev. Barry Bloom? If you need to get into contact with Rev. Barry Bloom please email him at revbarrybloom@gmail.com or call him at 303-273-9908. Meghan Groves, our office manager and child care provider, is leaving us at the end of February. She has been with us for a couple years, providing consistent and competent support. We would like to send her off with a goodbye gift. If you would like to donate, please contact Josette at josetteschaffer@msn.com If you have an announcement you would like to see in our weekly announcements please email Meghan at office_manager@greeleyuuc.org by 10 am on the Tuesday you wish to see the announcement in!
