What's happening at the UUCG? February 8th-14th
Tuesday, February 9th- Social Change Ministry Meeting 11:30am Tuesday, February 9th- Membership Ministry Meeting 1pm Wednesday, February 10th- Choir Rehearsal 7pm Sunday, February 14th- Creation and Redemption: Religious Longings in a Secular Universe- Scott Denning For thousands of years people have sought meaning in creation stories featuring powerful anthropomorphic Gods to whom they prayed for all manner of intercession. Out modern secular world features a new story of Creation, even more magnificent than those of our ancestors. In the words of astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson, "We are all connected: to each other biologically; to the Earth, chemically; to the rest of the universe, atomically." In leaving behind a Creator, though, some feel poignantly the loss of a Redeemer that went with the Divine Package. Church member and CSU scientist Scott Denning visits for a service that celebrates the glory of the scientific Creation from the insides of our brains to the rocks and dust from which time and space emerge. We also consider the human need for Redemption and ask whether that longing can be reconciled with a secular understanding of Creation. RE: Classroom Sunday Primary: Protection, care, and love Intermediate: Cuzco, Peru Other News and Reminders We have several really nice things left over from our fundraising auction on February 6th that got no bids. These will be displayed in the back of the sanctuary through February 21st. Some are actual items, others are services or events for sale. All items are HALF OFF their minimum bid (or more if you are able). Please give payment to Marcia Free, or leave a well marked payment in the church office (saying what item you took, and how much you gave for it). Thank you for your generous support of our church home! Many of you received your 2015 pledge/donation statements at church on Sunday. The statements will be available for pick up at church again next Sunday also. On Monday, February 8, 2016 all remaining statements will be mailed to homes. Please compare the statement with your own records and let our bookkeeper, Eve Enright, know if there are any discrepancies (bookkeeper@foothillsuu.org). Thank you! Day of Remembrance Commemoration On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 that led to the forced removal of more 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry to US concentration camps located in some of the most desolate areas of the country. A program commemorating this historic event and its consequences will take place on Thursday, February 18th, at UU Church 929 15th St Greeley, CO 80631 beginning at 11:45. Along with a brief history of the incarceration, the program will focus on the true story of Jack Tono and his courageous stand for his Constitutional rights accorded to him as a US citizen. Tono became what is known as a Resistor for refusing to be drafted into the US military until his full rights as a citizen were restored to him, his family and to all the other young Japanese American men faced with being drafted from behind barbed-wire to fight for freedom and democracy. Informational pamphlets will be available describing the history and restoration of Amache, the US WWII concentration camp for Japanese Americans located in far southeastern Colorado off of Highway 50 just east of Lamar near Granada, Colorado. Please join us to learn about this historic event that has so much relevance to the present day. For more information, call Hollis Berendt. The UUCG board cordially invites the entire congregation to lend their voice to the strength of our community by either participating in conversations with facilitators this spring, and/or attending our kickoff event with Rev. This practice can be used to enrich our personal lives, our day to day congregational life, and to help lay the foundation for vibrancy and growth in our church's future. More specific info and times are COMING SOON! Click HERE for the reimagine FAQ flyer!
