Our Unitarian Universalist ancestors (starting way back in 1648) asked us covenant with our own sacredness, each other, everyone in society (especially those who are suffering from injustice), the earth, and the Source of Life. Rev. Kelly explored how those covenants (connections) lead to salvation - healing and wholeness - in this life. She invited us to connect with the oppressed and explored how that looks when we do it as companions.

We explored our Sixth Source: Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Danelle Beauvais, Tandie Mitchell and Cori Feather - who have Native American ancestoral roots - led us in a spiritual exploration of the Native American religious experience and how we are all connected.

The core symbolism of the Water Communion is that we all come from water and are therefore connected. And yet we are individuals, separate from each other. We are separate AND together, the way water scatters into rain and streams and clouds and springs and ponds and puddles and yet flows together again and again, one great planetary ocean. No drop of water superior to any other; all water comes from the same place.
During this service, each person brought a vial or jar of water from a place that is meaningful to them and joined it into a beautiful bowl with the water others brought. We also chose a virtue we want to develop over the next year and named that virtue as we poured our water into the bowl. We blessed the water and used some of it to nourish our garden as a symbol of how we will nourish ourselves and our planet. |
